The Artist Susanna Doodeman has been living in Chicago since 2004. A young, Dutch-German artist, she was born not far from the romantic valleys of the Black Forest and the French Alsace. Her work exhibits a European sense of place awareness of both nature and history. The storytellers of Baden are known for collecting local folk tales and shaping them into artistic gems. Nineteenth-century poets from Karlsruhe sang of elemental forces and envisioned the region's landscape through their own passions. In the same way, the beauties of the regions through which she has passed also flow into For Ornament's jewelry. Her Dutch heritage shines through in her incorporation of the freshness of nature in her art, in her love of travel, and in her openness to ever-new forms of expression. Susanna's work received a jolt of inspiration when she moved to Cologne, a Rhine metropolis whose historic center is now also a hub for modern visual artists. Most of her inspiration and energy, though, comes from her connection with the natural world. The Work Susanna finds many of the materials for her jewelry in Europe and is constantly looking for new sources of inspiration. Every one of her pieces tells a story through the objects it weaves together. And, since her work now incorporates finds from the markets of Paris to Chicago estate sales, there are always new stories. One of her collections, the Elements, expresses the relationship between the elements -- earth, air, fire, and water -- in the form of semi-precious stones and Viennese glass, woven into organic, malleable filigree. Each semi-precious stone is chosen for its effect on both body and soul. Other works combine vintage and modern materials. How to Wear It The organic nature of each piece means that it is intended to change and be changed. You can stretch and shape every bracelet and necklace, making them flat or voluminous, flowing or angular, fitted or floating.
